Medical Marijuana: Where the candidates stand. 2008-04-10 11:40:00

With the general election only 7 months away, there is a certain excitement in the air about getting rid of Bush and all of his failed policies, among those being the war on drugs. It seems like every day there is some new research out proving that marijuana does have medical benefits from cancer and HIV patients to those with glaucoma or epilepsy, yet the DEA still spends its time busting people just for using medicine... now thats American. Now with the election on the horizon, we have a chance to put somebody into office who understands the medical value of marijuana, so what does your candidate think about medical marijuana? Lets take a look...

Barack Obama
When Barack Obama was asked early on in his campaign if he had ever smoked marijuana, he responded "Yes, and I inhaled... thats the point". So he used to enjoy the occasional recreational toke, but how does he feel about medical marijuana?

"When it comes to medical marijuana, I have more of a practical view than anything else. My attitude is that if it's an issue of doctors prescribing medical marijuana as a treatment for glaucoma or as a cancer treatment, I think that should be appropriate because there really is no difference between that and a doctor prescribing morphine or anything else. I think there are legitimate concerns in not wanting to allow people to grow their own or start setting up mom and pop shops because at that point it becomes fairly difficult to regulate.

So Barack wants to allow doctors who see fit be able to recommend marijuana as a treatment, and the doctors wouldn't have to worry about being prosecuted for making that recommendation.

Hillary Clinton
When Hillary Clinton was asked her opinion on medical marijuana she responded...



"With respect to medical marijuana, you know I think that we have had a lot of rhetoric and the federal government has been very intent upon trying to prevent states from being able to offer that as an option for people who are in pain. I think we should be doing medical research on this. We ought to find what are the elements that claim to be existing in marijuana that might help people who are suffering from cancer and nausea-related treatments. We ought to find that out. I don't think we should decriminalize it, but we ought to do research into what, if any, medical benefits it has."

So Hillary isn't for it or against it, she thinks there needs to be more research done to show that marijuana has medical purposes, which is a better stance than our current guy.

John McCain
When John McCain was asked about medical marijuana on the campaign trail, he gave the following response...



"Every medical expert I know of, including the AMA [American Medical Association], says that there are much more effective and much better treatments for pain than medical marijuana...I still would not support medical marijuana because I don't think that the preponderance of medical opinion in America agrees with [the] assertion that it's the most effective way of treating pain."

His response isn't really surprising considering his age and past, and the fact that he has been called "The second coming of Bush". However, the AMA does support unimpeded research on medical marijuana, as well as other major medical organizations including: The Institute of Medicine, The American Cancer Society; American Medical Association; Australian Commonwealth Department of Human Services and Health; California Medical Association; Federation of American Scientists; Florida Medical Association; and the National Academy of Sciences.

When it's time to vote, remember it's important to vote for your interests, not just your political party. And if doctors can give you morphine and vicodin to help you, there is absolutely no reason your doctor can't give you cannabis to help you as well. Health, and the care of our fellow humans should be the top priority of our government and our health care providers. Money, shouldn't. Please register and vote this November!

We are meant to believe that they are somehow different (even opposites) and that choosing a side is important. It is not. That is just a means to divide and conquer us. Im splift, i mean split on the decision, but with an ultimate verdict of definitely pro medicinal marijuana. When I vaporize, my general aches and pains actually get slightly amplified because my senses are "under the influence", but since I enjoy this natures wonder so much I can only wholeheartedly be pro medicinal marijuana.

Anyhow, I will give Barack this..I personally heard him asked "If you become President of the United states will you enforce the federal ban on marijuana and put those who use Medical Marijuana in jail?" He responded. "I believe that would be a poor use of our resources." But he has also said that he wouldnt try to abolish the ban.

What a lot of you dont realize is that if you vote for the candidate that supports your views best, and enough people do that to sway the vote, then it becomes an issue that future politicians will want to incorporate into their campaigns to obtain votes. Given that this is a site dedicated to marijuana, Im going to assume that weed legalization/decriminalization is a big issue for a lot of you. With that in mind, a lot of you are thinking that Obama, being the lesser evil of the three when it comes to weed, would be the best choice. However, hes consistently dodged the issue, changed his mind a few times on it, and wont even promise to try and end the drug war. That in my mind isnt very guaranteeing. Id much rather vote for Ron Paul, who WILL lose. Ron Paul is passionate about his thoughts on government, Obama is not. Ron Paul will do things regardless of what the majority wants, Obama will not. Im not asking you to vote for Ron Paul at all though. Im asking you to vote for who you truly believe in. If thats either of the top three, awesome, go ahead and vote for them. Someone above said that people who vote for Ron Paul are the reasons why people like George Bush take office. However, what you have to realize is that the same mentality (the "I dont want to waste my vote" one) is what gets people like him in power in the first place.

The problem the us government has is that they will not make money on pot! They forget that not everyone can afford the prescriptions, its cheaper to smoke a little pot. The only thing the US government wants is to fatten the pockets of the rich Drug companys and keep the average man down. Heaven forbid someone take a natural product like weed, Lord only knows what Morphine or any other Cancer drug will do to you. Morphine is 100 times more addictive then pot. The only thing pot will make you a addicted to is your fridge. Anyone I know who has had cancer needed weed to make them eat anyways. The drugs the doctors give surpress your appetite anyways, the munchies are going to hurt anyone!!!

Hey Bigbuzz (and others), While I agree with the but about weed being fine, remember that morphine is a natural chemical in multiple ways: various opiates are synthesized naturally by the brain and morphine, for by far the largest part, is extracted from opium poppies and not chemically created. Being natural is no guarantee so safety or to goodness.

I thought weed was expensive on the street until I got a MARINOL prescription. My insurance co. pays almost just under $1500.00 per month for 60 20 mg capsules. It would be so much more cost effective if they would instead pay for an OZ.

We learn in biology that marijuana is the only "Narcotic" that is psychologically addictive. The rest are physically addictive. What is the difference? Well, with marijuana you are only considered addicted if you like it. With everything else "Legal" alcohol, nicotine, caffeine and huge illegal list, that addiction lies in your nervous system, spinal cord and brain. America got through the depression with HEMP. Its the most versatile plant ever. The seeds contain Omega fatty acids which reduce plaque build-up in your arteries. In over 5000 years of usage "First cultivated in China in 2600 BC" no one has ever overdosed or died using marijuana. Have many from Alcohol use alone have died in the last 5000 years? How many from Tobacco? How many died for Opium? reference "Opium Wars". The obviousness of these facts can all be confirmed yourselves. So therefore the obviousness of the American views on marijuana are so utterly obtuse and peppered with ignorance and dis/mis information that any argument on the issue is meaningless until the realization of these facts come to fruition. Marijuana users are not criminals, those who perpetuate the fact that its dangerous and creates dangerous people are the real criminals, its just another form of generalization and hate mongering.

Its nice to see people bashing on Ron Paul. If you morons knew anything about what he stands for, you would know that he blows any of the other three candidates OUT OF THE WATER. The biggest concern in this country is the fact that our government has taken away our most basic freedoms, BEHIND OUR BACKS. Ron Paul stands for the constitution, and if you did some research, you would see he is FOR the people. Haha, ObamaLlama... Thats great. I think it is sad that this country has become locked into the whole 2-party thing so people like Ron Paul stand almost no chance of getting elected. It did not used to be that way... I can not remember which one (I haven not taken history in too long), but I know one of our current parties was originally a third party and the candidate and platform was so appealing, it became a "main" party. I want to say it was the Republican party... But you know, back when all this happened, Republican party policies resembled those of the present day Democratic Party and vice-versa. So maybe there is hope... If not for Ron Paul (I think the majority of people are too focused on Obamas race and Clintons gender to vote for Ron Paul) then maybe for another third party candidate. Stranger things have happened...
